I harvest my scapes with a bag lined milk crate. As you fill the crate you can easily change out for another bag and leave your harvest at the end of the rows. Will go much faster than your pouch.😊

Do you have any suggestions for pest management in squash. Seems like my field is getting hammered by insects 😢

I use to use steam and crimper to kill the cover crop. (err) but that's a problem because it broke but it was the best cover crop killer - Instead of a flame weeder but did you try crimping then wetting the cover crop? That would mean when you hit it with a crimp and flame while wet would give you steam. Which would kill the cover crop but probably leave what's below it fine. And you would just need to hit that in strips instead of the whole thing. As it's an extra step to the crimp.

Hi man, thanks so much for this video and all. I'm curious, you mention that you are leasing the land. How much if i may ask or how is it calculated per square foot? Im just curious how much 'leasing' ends up accounting for your expenses and how that influences obviously you profit margins. Maybe for episode in the future, would be nice to now how lucrative or (not) running your operation or smaller can be and how best to start. Thanks alot once again for all your great insights. I'm in central Texas hill country and for 3-4 months in the summer it doesn't drop below 90F even at night (literally 3am and 90F). Tomatoes, peppers, (sometimes) okra/corn/black beans do alright on their own under fruit/nut trees but I often find myself out in the wee hours misting the beds by hand to give them a break. I mulch heavily but often the leaves themselves are showing intense stress from the never-ending heat. I'm trying to show this can work on a low budget so I would rather not install a lot of automated systems/plastic irrigation - any tips that don't have me out at 2a would be great.

How do you know what chemicals are on the hay that the horses ate? And what ends up in your compost?

This is stupid. Just tell me what seeds to get, how to plant them, how to water them, how to harvest, etc. That's how to start a farm. This video is just extraneous bullshit.

For the most part my weeks are doing my regular day job, stopping by my farm a few afternoons a week, and one or both weekend days doing more work... luckily I'm a teacher, and now have two months of only farmer time! But the fall is gonna be bananas (or peppers, cause I grow peppers, and not bananas, but that's not the term for things being crazy...)

Did you manage to find a new swear jar? I use a swear barrel. It is cheaper than buying swear jars every week or so 😉

Completely isolated from the video but watching you use that machine for lettuce has me wondering if a T post from end to end and cable wire set up attached to the main bar above the catcher of your machine could make it hang free so you would not have to balance the weight at such an awkward angle. Sounds like a lot but depending on your free time it could be useful.

I see you have compost mulch piles behind you. Can you not use that?

Hmm, i have an area of my yard that I would love to cultivate more effectively as a garden, but it is just all weeds at this point. I’m not sure how to control the weeds, replenish the crappy soil, and set the stage for crops next year. I live in zone 7 (Charlotte, NC area) and am in the suburbs, but trying to figure out how to get some good returns on our small plot of land ❤️. I’d appreciate any recommendations you have.

I don't think you mentioned what time you go to bed. Also, when I was a kid I really wanted to join the military as a soldier - then I watch a TV documentary about soldiering - I no longer wanted to do that. For a while now I've thought how wonderful it would be to have a homestead, and to grow as much of my own food as possible and possibly sell a surplus - I'm really not sure I have the motivation or drive to come anywhere near. So hats off to you and soldiers, because with out folks like you the rest of us would be done for.

I work full time so my market gardening is small scale, half an acre split into 2. So quarter acre of flowers the part i make money on and veggies the other half that i just do a free co worker csa I have had to break everything into the 5 hour chunk in the morning and have each day of the week be a certain type of goal. Tuesday is flower harvest deadheading etc wednesday is mindless stuff weeding picking rocks unlike the rest of the week when i pick rocks thursday is planting seed starting picking rocks friday is veggie harvest wash and pack saturday is catch up on whatever project or goal didn't get accomplished

Came to this channel wanting to learn about organic gardening came out wanting to be a better man and help my family even more thank you god bless

Hi there Jessie! I've been watching your videos for almost a year now. I found your channel soon after l started thinking about becoming a farmer and doing research. You've been such an incredible ambassador for the no-till movement and I've become thoroughly obsessed with the importance of soil health. I'm convinced that it is that key not just to productive farming but also to repairing human and animal health (the book What Your Food Ate was an aha moment for me on this link). If you were farming in upstate New York instead of Kentucky my next move would be to try and come and work for you to learn all of your moves. The mention that you used to be a cook is what spurred me to write this comment, as I'm currently working as a cook here in New York and my love of food and cooking is one of the things that led me to farming. I'm 21 and my plan is to cook for several years and save money by living with my parents, then start to apprentice on farms and learn everything I can through hands on experience. For now I'll just keep reading books, watching your videos, and practicing hard work and efficiency in the kitchen. You are extremely awesome and a huge inspiration. Peace.

Totally agree with the use of worms! My finished vermicast looks like used coffee grounds and grows some gargantuan tomato plants

I grow using 1.2m wide beds with 0.4m wide wood chip paths in between. Beds get 3cm of compost annually & paths 5cm of wood chip on the paths. Interestingly, I see as much if not more roots under the paths as in the beds (this after 5 years of using this system). Slugs? Not an issue, as (shock!) I use an application of nematodes in late May & again in September. Beetles & hedgehogs appear OK with this & seem happy to switch to cutworms & leatherjackets for their food, which is fine by me.
